Background and Aim: prosody is a very important factor in communication and includes such parameters as: duration, intonation, pitch, stress, rhythm etc. Intonation is the pitch variation in one sentence. Duration is the time taken to utter a voice. The aim of the present study was to evaluate some parameters of prosody such as duration and intonation curve in INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES among normal Farsi speaking adults in order to determine the characteristics of this aspect of language with an emphasis on laboratory testing. Methods: This study was performed as a cross-sectional one. The participants included 134 male and female Farsi speaking individuals aging between 18-30 years. In this study two INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES with open and closed answers were used. The voice samples were analyzed by Dr.speech -real analysis software. Data analysis incorporated unilateral analysis of variance and an intonation curve was drawn for each sentence. Results: The parameter of duration among men and women was significantly different (p£0.001). Duration in open questions was significantly longer than yes/no questions (p£0.001). The intonation curves of the two groups were similar. Conclusion: Men and women use duration changes, for making difference in prosody. On the whole, duration among women is longer than men. In open questions, the duration of SENTENCES is mostly due to the question word. The intonation curve in open questions has more amplitude. Women show much more changes in basic frequency for transferring INTERROGATIVE state in their expressions.

Abstract:

The present study has investigated the speech acts in the INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES in Salman Savoji's poetry in a descriptiveanalytical method. The research findings show that there is a coherent link between Salman's language and his thought i. e. the poet uses language appropriate to his audiences’,position and social status. Salman has used the most questions in his expressive acts. First, he seeks to convince the audience and attract their participation and approval. Salman uses these questions to express his views and gain the approval of the person who is eulogized. Second, he seeks to exaggerate, highlight, and emphasize the content of the speech which corresponds to the texture of the ode, the descriptions, exaggerations and imaginative praises of a eulogy. To observe the didactic aspect of his poetry, and also to maintain the high dignity of the eulogized person, Salman, in the persuasive acts, avoids the direct asking of his request. Doing so, he lowers the obligatory and reprimanding connotation of his words resulting in the audience’, s lack of willing to oppose him. Expressive acts usually have close and intertwined meanings. This conceptual affinity creates a vast network of intertwined concepts or "conceptual auras. " Therefore it becomes possible to engage the audience's feelings in reading the text and strengthen the desired effect by reinforcing the emotional richness of the words. The speaker's words are explicit and unambiguous in commissive acts, so due to the multi-layered nature of literary texts, this act has little place in poetry.

Abstract:

A sentence can structurally be used in three forms: declarative, INTERROGATIVE, and imperative. Semantically, each type may have different meanings in various contexts. The discussion of secondary or multiple meanings of a sentence has long been considered by rhetoricians, especially in the field of semantics. The secondary meanings of the above three SENTENCES have been frequently debated. It has also been considered in today’ s pragmatics. In this paper, Parvin E’ tesâ mi’ s poems have been studied from the perspective of secondary meanings in INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES. The question of this research is to recognize what are the secondary meanings of INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES in her poems in order to determine the capacity range of these kinds of SENTENCES in the Persian language and the literary context. The study showed that out of 639 INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES, 34 are real questions and 29 have secondary or implicit meanings. Out of 29 secondary meanings, the most frequency belongs to the denial questions and the least to regret ones. The expression of several secondary meanings in one sentence has simultaneously been found in her works. This study shows that despite the different time periods and her gender (being a woman), her literary text, like other texts of outstanding poets in Persian literature, had more desire to use the INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES in the secondary sense and the literary context enhances the capacity to utilize INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES in secondary meanings.

Abstract:

The studies of language categorization demonstrate that there is no direct relationship between the rhetorical and semantic-intentional categories. A major part of the difficulties in literary concepts go back to the lack of knowledge of secondary meanings of the semantic-intentional categories of the SENTENCES. The purpose of the present research is to explore the semantic-intentional aspects of the INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES in Shams’ Ghazals. The method of this research is descriptive and the data were analyzed based on the discourse analysis approach and according to library and document analysis method. The corpus includes 264 Ghazals selected randomly according to Cochran formula. The results show that Moulawi employed 27 functions out of 35 secondary functions under discussion in this research. The statistical analyses demonstrated that the most frequent secondary functions include the following: wonder, forbiddance, negative interrogation, blaming, negation, expressive interrogation. The application or nonapplication of a number of the functions is in close association with their affinity or lack of affinity with Molana’s worldview, which has been fully investigated in the paper.

Abstract:

The most frequently used grammatical categories in the languages of the world are declarative, INTERROGATIVE, imperative and exclamative SENTENCES, which are characteristically used to express of statement, question, order and surprise. But linguistic studies indicate that in daily application there are few correspondences between the grammatical form of a sentence and its semantic-pragmatic function; in other words, each of SENTENCES in addition to calculated means, based on their context expresses other means. This paper in order to discovering semantic-pragmatic function of INTERROGATIVEs in Eraghi’ s Ghazals, between different functions that scholars have introduced for INTERROGATIVE, has review 487 hemistich with INTERROGATIVE structure in 220 Eraghi’ s ghazals considering functions that Shamisa has introduced. The result of this research show that Eraghi employed 20 functiones out of 28 secondary functions under discussion and based on statistical analyses, the most frequent secondary functions include the following: negative interrogation, wish, disability, forbiddance, negation that those functions are harmony with lyricism’ s context and structure. Because in this genre, poet ignores his whishes and confesses to his weakness and then he wants just arrive to his favourite.

Abstract:

INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES are among grammatical categories that occur most frequently in world languages. In Contemporary poetry including those composed by Ebtehaj, sometimes INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES fulfil semantic-pragmatic functions other than posing questions including surprise, breaking news, disappointment, complaint, objection, warning, rebuke, etc. This study aims at an investigation of the semantic-pragmatic functions that INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES fulfil in Ebtehaj's poetry. A descriptive-analytic methodology is employed to survey a statistical society that includes the complete poetical works by Ebtehaj. 120 sonnets, 84 Nimai poems, 17 quatrains, 10 couplets and 8 strophes were randomly studied. The results show that in 187 cases, Sayeh used INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES to fulfil 28 different secondary functions other than interrogation including the following respectively: expressing wish, objection, surprise, complaint, helplessness, doubt, rhetorical questions, disappointment, praise, emphasis, breaking news and attracting attention.

Abstract:

Arabkhaneh, a rural destrict of Nehbandan and located in South Khorasan, is among the first residence of the Arabs immigrated to Iran. Due to the distance from its actual source and adjacency with Iranian culture, the language of this region is considerably influenced by Farsi. This impact takes place on four levels: syntactic, phoneme, phonetic and semantic, with the most impact on phoneme (structure). In this article, the authors compare the structure of INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES in standard Farsi with standard Arabic. The field data has been gathered from Khosroabad Arabkhaneh village and then analyzed and compared using typology approaches and frameworks. The results showed resemblance in the order of the elements of an INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES and words and relocation of them. Nonetheless, since the INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES in Farsi, Arabkhaneh dialect and standard Arabic have some resemblance, it could not be hypothesized that the number of INTERROGATIVEs in Arabkhaneh dialect has been influenced by Farsi.

Abstract:

SENTENCES can be structurally divided into three main categories: declarative, INTERROGATIVE, and imperative. Each of these structures possesses unique syntactic features that relate to different roles and meanings within a discursive context. The primary purpose of a question is to seek information; however, INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES are sometimes used instead of other sentence types, especially declarative ones, for greater impact. In this research, the INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES from the novel The House of the Idrisis are extracted and examined for their frequency, secondary purposes, and classification. Examining the types and frequency of secondary purposes in INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES can reveal stylistic values, particularly in understanding the thoughts, ideas, and personal perspective of poets and writers. Understanding secondary purposes and their types in a writer's works can serve as a valuable guide to the sociolinguistic aspects as well as the culture and society of their time. Alizadeh sometimes conveys her criticisms, beliefs, and attitudes to the audience through INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES. The most frequent secondary purposes of the INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES in this novel include astonishment, disdain, contrast, condemnation, reproach, emphasis, inclusion of judgment, warning, negation and denial, contradiction, etc. It is worth mentioning that many components within this novel carry socio-political ideological weight, and are therefore examined with such consideration in mind.
